There is more to the island of Jamaica than meets the eye and if you have not traveled there yet, it is worth doing so at least once in your life. The island is famous for its jerk chicken as well as its many beaches, but there is a whole lot more that you can do besides eat and get a tan. Here are just a few activities to try while vacationing in Jamaica:
Hiking at Mayfield River
Normally people hike up mountains or other terrains that do not involve water but with this unique river experience, you can get the chance to hike across a cool and clear river with special shoes made for the task. The river is completely surrounded by a beautiful forest, and in some areas, the water is deep enough that you can dive in and take a swim. An added bonus is the chance to swim underneath two breathtaking waterfalls at the end of your hike. What could be better than the powerful force of clear blue water smacking your face?
Blue Mountains Biking
Just an hour from Kingston, you can enjoy an exciting bike tour, downhill from the Blue Mountains (7000ft high). You get a chance to take in the beautiful scenery and swim at one of the many waterfalls that are tucked inside the mountains.
Irie Blue Hole
Located just fifteen minutes from Ocho Rios, the Irie Blue Hole offers tourists the opportunity to jump from cliffs as high as 27ft into the turquoise water. If you need some assistance, there are several guides available, who can give you a helping hand. Once you’re in the water, you can swim around and enjoy the many waterfalls and pools available to you.
Blue Lagoon Rafting
Located in Port Antonio, this lagoon is 180ft deep and contains a 50/50 mixture of salt and fresh water. You can choose to raft on one of the many bamboo rafts on hand, or jump into the water and swim. Rafting offers you the chance to take in the beautiful scenery that Jamaica has to offer.
Pelican Bar sunset
The Pelican Bar is located about half an hour from the Treasure Beach, right in the center of the Caribbean Sea. The bar offers a wide array of exotic drinks as well as fresh seafood, cooked for you straight from the sea. To leave a mark on your journey, you can write a message on the bar’s wooden planks, and also read other people’s quirky messages!
Jamaica is a tropical paradise that truly has a lot to offer, and there is an abundance of other activities you can do whilst on your vacation. These include bobsledding and taking part in the many water sports that the island has to offer. There are always plenty of locals always willing to help you out if you encounter any trouble, and the general atmosphere is very welcoming and fun. If you are looking for a more relaxing day, you can always attend one of the popular reggae music concerts or one of the many restaurants and beaches located around the island.
